Kicking off Nyfw, Harlem’s Fashion Row hosted the ultimate celebration of Black Fashion & culture in honor of three living legends. Held at Sony Hall on Wednesday February 5th, HFR founder and CEO Brandice Daniel curated a theatrical tribute to honor Dapper Dan, April Walker, and Misa Hylton. With the help of Amazon music, the celebration began with dance reenactments of some of fashions most pivotal moments in history. Dancer & model, Mazi graced the stage wearing Lil Kim’s infamous fur bikini, in honor of Misa Hylton’s style work in the ‘Crush On You’ video.
The live experience also took us back to the early 90’s honoring April Walker’s famous ‘Walker Wear’ line that was often worn by Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dog, and even the late great Aaliyah. In traditional black celebration culture, the festivities also included an original song by the amazing choir who sang out, ‘He’s the man, Dapper Dan,’ bringing an emotional and humbling feeling to everyone attending.
I have never witnessed any other fashion organization celebrate the greats in black culture the way that Harlem’s Fashion Row does. Brandice Daniel and her entire team does an amazing job at giving the pioneers their roses while they’re here. We are honored to have shared such an amazing moment with some of the greats in black fashion.
HFR will be hosting the second half of their New York Fashion Week events on Feb. 14th at GOOGLE, featuring a full day of fashion insider talk! For more of Harlem’s Fashion Row, check out their Instagram here.
