By now, I’m sure you’ve all read
Lindsay Wagner’s article published in “The Cut,” titled, “Everywhere and Nowhere, What it’s really like to be black and work in fashion.” The article takes you through an array of emotions especially if you’ve witnessed the racism that indirectly(direct) occurs in the fashion industry. Having a partner who’s worked for every luxury brand in NYC, I constantly hear about discrimination and blatant disrespect she encounters. Somethings got to give!
Articles like Lindsay’s article are important because these issues are whispered about throughout the #fashion & #beauty industry. I host a #NYFW class and It’s upsetting that I have to tell these #fashionhopefuls that honestly, this industry loves our culture but they don’t love us. It’s the truth.
As a #creative and a #blackwriter, I understand how difficult it is to be taken seriously in this industry. I’ve attended/worked/covered NYFW for almost 5 years now. I’ve worked with the #CFDA back of house at fashion week shows, I’ve been a dresser, I’ve been in the Press pit and the vibe is always the same. There’s always this “You can’t sit with us..” vibe, but I’m here thooo?
We have to work twice as hard just to get to the damn door. If your aim is to tackle this industry on a scale larger than your local brands and local #influencers, you legit have to be one step ahead of your Caucasian counterparts, just to attempt to get a seat at the table. By the time that you get the damn seat, the love and appreciation for your industry will never be the same.
These issues are deeper than a being able to put a cute outfit together and trot around a #fashionshow. We have to create our own shit, support each other and understand that we are a #force to be reckoned with. With our #influence, we have the power to shift the vibration of this white washed ass industry.-Tyshaniek.
